Edward tells Markham that the manuscript of Markham's poems came to late. He is using a copy for the next issue and that he will print it in the Globe. He tells of Mrs. Wheeler being very ill.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
